4 Summer Activities in British Columbia for Those Over 60

At BCSLA, we know a thing or two about the importance of engagement and purpose for older adults, and British Columbia certainly has no shortage of fun opportunities during the summer. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains, there’s always a new adventure to discover in British Columbia!

Whether you’re searching for summer activities in British Columbia to enjoy with family or friends or looking for an activity to enjoy with your fellow senior living neighbours, we’re sharing four exciting and unique summer activities to add to your seasonal bucket list!

Go on a Boardwalk Hike

The dense rainforest climate of British Columbia’s islands means plenty of beautiful places to go hiking. However, it can also make it difficult to safely navigate, stick to a trail, and avoid hazards.

Fortunately, there are a multitude of boardwalk trails throughout several of British Columbia’s forests! The boardwalks make it easier for hikers to see where they’re going while protecting the landscape of the forest by discouraging people from going off the beaten path.

If you’re searching for a family-friendly path, visit the Ancient Forest Trail in the Ancient Forest/Chun T’oh Whudujut Provincial Park. This is the perfect option for a relaxing hike with phenomenal scenery featuring cedar trees up to 2,000 years old and beautiful waterfalls.

Mark Your Calendar for the Sunflower Festival

The Chilliwack Sunflower Festival is the perfect ode to summertime, beginning in August and running through mid-September. The winding pathways of the festival take up almost 8 acres, featuring over 50 varieties of sunflowers and gorgeous displays of wildflowers, dahlias, zinnias, and more! Each grouping of flowers is planted in stages so visitors can take in all of the full-bloom beauty of each peak season.

Aside from some beautiful photo opportunities, the festival also features plenty of outdoor games that are fun for the whole family.

In addition, visitors can enjoy the festival’s “U-Pick” sunflowers, where you can pick from three different sunflower varieties to take home. If you don’t feel like getting your hands dirty, there’s also a field-side store with plenty of beautiful potted flowers, seeds and bulbs, souvenirs, and even ice cream!

Explore Vancouver

Why not treat yourself to a weekend trip to one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Canada? Vancouver is known for its thriving arts and culture, with opportunities to take in some of the world’s most incredible art. As a bustling west coast seaport, there are also plenty of outdoor activities for nature lovers!

Spend an afternoon on a whale-watching cruise to view a fantastic array of marine life, like orcas, seals, and porpoises. Or end your day enjoying an enchanting sunset dinner cruise around the city’s beautiful waterfront.

Join a Yacht Club

While a high-end membership at a yacht club might not seem like the most reasonable of summer activities in British Columbia, Desolation Sound Yacht Charters ensures that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy a seaside adventure during the warmer months!

Whether it’s your first or 50th yachting experience, Desolation Sound offers plenty of unique experiences to help you connect with the great outdoors, explore the beauty of British Columbia’s seaside communities, and encounter the natural wonder of wildlife in the Pacific Ocean.

Located in Comox on gorgeous Vancouver Island, adventures range from a tour of Vivien Island’s sea lions to the marine bird sanctuary on Mitlenatch Island. If you’re searching for rich tradition and heritage, charter a boat to Refuge Cove, an eclectic community with a rich history of ancient settlers and artisans; this is a great stop for a traditional BC island experience!

Our mission at BCSLA is to reshape how senior living communities are managed and operated to further enhance the lives of older adults throughout British Columbia. To that end, we’re dedicated to sharing resources and information that encourage seniors to continue leading active, fulfilling lives.
